Cooperation between China and Caribbean countries contributes to the development and common prosperity of the region, Caribbean officials said.
“China has helped us strengthen sustainable, self-sufficient and resilient regional food security and agriculture in Barbados,” Carlos Lovell, Chief of Staff of the Barbados Defense Force, told Xinhua during the 48th Ordinary Meeting of the Conference of Heads of Government of the Community of Caribbean States (CARICOM). Latrae Rahming, Director of Communications at the Office of the Prime Minister of The Bahamas, emphasized that CARICOM and China have long enjoyed a solid relationship in various fields such as education, health and infrastructure construction. Antigua and Barbuda Prime Minister Gaston Browne said his country was among the first countries to join the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), noting China’s support for the construction of a new terminal at the V.C. Bird International Airport in the capital. “China has been a very good and reliable partner for the countries of the Global South, including Grenada and other Caribbean countries,” said Grenada Foreign Minister Joseph Andall. Political scientist Jaime Tamayo of the University of Guadalajara in Mexico said China is a vital partner for Caribbean development, offering trade and investment opportunities without imposing political conditions or interfering in internal affairs.
