The Chinese Foreign Ministry responded to statements published on the US White House website that tariffs on imports from China to the United States had increased by up to 245 percent. The ministry urged journalists to contact the US side for details of these allegations.
The statement was contained in the latest memo published on the White House website. “As a result of China’s retaliatory actions, tariffs on Chinese products are currently as high as 245 percent,” it said. At a press conference on the issue, Chinese Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Lin Jian responded to the question of what China’s reaction to these allegations would be, saying, “Take this rate to the US side and ask them.” Commenting on Washington’s recent statements, Lin emphasized that the US is the initiator of this trade war and said that China has taken the necessary countermeasures to protect its legitimate rights and interests and to ensure international justice and fairness, and that these steps are completely “reasonable and legitimate”. “There are no winners in trade wars,” Lin Jian said, noting that China’s position has been clear from the beginning. “China neither wants to start such a war nor is afraid of it,” the spokesperson said, calling on the US: “If the United States really wants to resolve this issue through dialogue and negotiation, it should abandon excessive pressure, abandon the language of threats and blackmail, and engage in dialogue with China on the basis of equality, respect and mutual benefit.”
