China’s Foreign Ministry (FM) on Tuesday criticized new rules issued by US President Joe Biden’s administration, reportedly aimed at restricting advanced artificial intelligence (AI) chips and technologies from reaching China. The ministry vowed to take firm measures to safeguard the legitimate rights of Chinese companies.
On Monday, the US issued a rule promoting the diffusion of AI technology among “key allies and partners” while restricting access for “countries of concern.” According to a White House fact sheet, the measures specifically target China’s access to such technologies.
China condemned the move, accusing the US of abusing national security claims, politicizing trade, and weaponizing technology issues. FM spokesperson Guo Jiakun stressed that the US strategy harms global interests, creating divides and obstructing the fair development of AI.
Guo emphasized that AI is a shared asset of humanity and criticized the US for trying to deprive developing nations of scientific progress.
