The BRICS countries continue to work on the implementation of a single currency and single payment systems within the union.

Mauricio Lirio, Brazil’s Sherpa in the Group of Twenty (G20), spoke to TASS, according to the Report.

“Yes, we are working on it,” he said. “Countries are holding talks under the Russian presidency and this is one of the topics of this presidency,” Lirio added.

On the margins of the BRICS summit in South Africa in August 2023, Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva supported the initiative to create a single settlement currency. In an interview with the first issue of the TASS project “BRICS Bulletin”, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister and Russia’s BRICS Sherpa Sergey Ryabkov said that BRICS is considering the creation of a form of mutual settlement similar to that of the early European Union.

The BRICS presidency passed to Russia on 1 January 2024, will last until the end of the year and includes more than 200 events with a wide range of topics. The main event of the presidency will be the BRICS summit in Kazan in October 2024.
