Brazil has held talks with IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi on the creation of a submarine fleet, part of which will consist of nuclear submarines.

According to the Report, this development was announced by the government of the South American country on its YouTube channel.

IAEA Director-General Rafael Grossi arrived in Rio de Janeiro for talks with the country’s leadership on the implementation of its nuclear programme. Grossi said that Brazil must comply with international rules governing the use of atomic energy in order to launch the programme.

Admiral Marcus Sampaio Olsen, commander of the Brazilian Navy, said the development of the nuclear fleet would be “a scientific and technological development programme rather than a defence programme”.

“Numerous universities from the academic and commercial sectors are participating in the programme. The project will create 60,000 jobs,” the admiral emphasised.

While the third unit is being built at the country’s only nuclear power plant, named after Admiral Alvaro Alberto, in the southeastern Brazilian state of Rio de Janeiro, a programme to supply submarines to the Brazilian Navy is also on the agenda. The programme involves the development of five submarines, four conventional and one nuclear-powered.
