Southern European countries are at risk of desertification in the event of global warming of more than three degrees Celsius, said Jim Skea, chairman of the UN Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change. The Daily Telegraph reports.
‘The whole of Europe is vulnerable, especially the Mediterranean. We are already seeing desertification happening not only in North Africa but also on the southern fringes of Europe, such as Greece, Portugal and Turkey,’ Skea said.
According to him, global warming of three degrees Celsius could occur by 2100. At the same time, Western Europe and the UK, according to Skea, will face even greater warming – up to five degrees Celsius – by the end of the century.
One of the biggest risks of global warming could be the formation of a hot and humid climate. Skea noted that this could cause economic problems, with Poland facing difficulties in growing potatoes and Italy threatened with the disappearance of durum wheat, which is used in pasta production.
