UN Secretary-General António Guterres called for avoiding further fragmentation in world politics and guaranteeing the preservation of the global economy, a single Internet space and common standards in the field of artificial intelligence technologies.

Guterres made this statement at a meeting of the “SCO plus” format in Astana, the Report reported, citing TASS.

“The inability of states to come together to find solutions to common problems reflects the profound failure of our world. The emergence of multilateralism in world politics is lagging behind. And we must avoid at all costs the risk of further fragmentation. We need a single global economy, a single world market, a single global Internet and common standards for artificial intelligence and similar technologies,” he said.

According to him, “international institutions and principles of international organisation, from the [UN] Security Council to the Bretton Woods system, are outdated and do not meet the requirements of the times.”

The UN Secretary-General recalled that they were created after the Second World War “when the world was different and many countries that exist today had not yet decolonised”. “The [UN] Future Summit in September will be an important opportunity for renewal. It will discuss fundamental reform of the international financial infrastructure to make it more responsive to the realities of today’s world and to meet today’s challenges for the benefit of developing countries.” In this way, he emphasised, the world can develop “together on the basis of the UN Charter and international law”.
