Biden lists Kenya as key US ally outside NATO

US President Joe Biden has granted Kenya the status of an important ally outside the North Atlantic Alliance.

This was stated in a memorandum distributed by the White House press service, the Report reports.

The American leader emphasised that he “included Kenya among the major allies of the United States outside NATO.” Biden notified Congress in May of his plans to grant Kenya this status.

He said then that this decision was “in recognition of the assistance that has come from Kenya for many years in the area of responsibility of the US Armed Forces Africa Command.”

It should be noted that the status of major ally outside NATO indicates close relations between states and provides “certain advantages to foreign partners in the field of defence trade and security cooperation”, but at the same time “does not impose any security obligations” on the United States.

Kenya will be the 19th country on the list of countries with non-NATO status as a major ally of the United States.
