US President Joe Biden has ordered the unilateral US sanctions regime against Venezuela to be extended for another year.

As reported by the Report, the notification was issued by the White House press service.

The document states that the situation in Venezuela, which allegedly forced Washington in 2015 to decide to impose various restrictive measures against Caracas, “continues to pose an unusual and extraordinary threat to US national security and foreign policy.”

“As a result, I am extending for one year the National Emergency Regime imposed against Venezuela in 2015 by Executive Order 13692,” Biden said.

The US sanctions imposed in 2015 have been extended and expanded in subsequent years. At the same time, Washington had previously issued several licences providing for the relaxation of certain restrictions. US presidential national security aide Jake Sullivan said in February that the US administration would decide in April whether to fully lift sanctions against Venezuela, depending on whether Caracas honours its agreements with the opposition.
