Bangladesh’s Ambassador to China Nazmul Islam has described China as the South Asian country’s “time-tested partner” and expressed strong optimism that Beijing will make more use of Bangladesh’s easily accessible market and production capabilities, to the mutual benefit of both countries.
“China has been a reliable partner in our development journey,” Islam said at a reception in Beijing on Wednesday to mark the 54th anniversary of Bangladesh’s Independence and National Day. This year, China and Bangladesh are celebrating the 50th anniversary of their diplomatic relations. “This golden jubilee is not only a celebration of our past achievements, but also a promise for the future. From economic growth to trade and investment, education, culture, health care and many other fields, we will continue to support each other,” he said. The two countries have a deep-rooted friendship built on mutual respect, cooperation and common goals, Islam said, noting that bilateral relations have developed significantly over the years in trade, investment, infrastructure and people-to-people exchanges. According to the Chinese Foreign Ministry, China is Bangladesh’s largest trading partner, while Bangladesh is China’s second largest trading partner in South Asia. The ambassador also emphasized that the recent visit to China by Muhammad Yunus, senior adviser to the interim government of Bangladesh, has greatly boosted bilateral ties.
