Baku has once again called on Yerevan to provide accurate information on the massive placement of anti-personnel mines by Armenia on Azerbaijani territory during the occupation.

In a post on its X website, the Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry said Baku welcomed the adoption of the resolution on anti-personnel mines at the UN.

“As an original co-sponsor, Azerbaijan welcomes the adoption of the resolution entitled “The Impact of Anti-Personnel Mines on the Full Exercise of All Human Rights” at the 58th session of the UN Human Rights Council. The resolution, adopted on Friday, on the International Day for Mine Awareness and Assistance in Mine Action, paves the way to take global mine action to a historically new level through the recognition and restoration of the affected human rights of millions of landmine victims globally,” said the statement.

“Azerbaijan, which has been subjected to massive contamination by landmines and other explosive waste as a result of Armenia’s occupation of its territory for 30 years, will continue its efforts at the national and international levels to ensure “respect for obligations under international human rights and humanitarian law” on the rights of landmine victims,” it said.

“We also emphasize the importance of the resolution’s call on states to “cooperate effectively to address the impact of anti-personnel mines on the protection and promotion of all human rights, inter alia by accelerating demining efforts.”

The Ministry emphasized that in addition to the fulfillment of this call, obligations under humanitarian law also require states to share accurate information to assist in the mapping of mined areas, which is particularly important for the protection of the civilian population in post-conflict settings.

“In this context, we once again call on the Armenian side to respect its obligations under international human rights and humanitarian law and to share accurate information on landmines that were heavily laid on Azerbaijani territory during the occupation,” the ministry said.
