The largest groups in the European Parliament are close to agreeing on the transformation of the security and defence subcommittee into a full-fledged committee.

According to the Report, this news was reported by the Euractiv portal, citing sources in the EP.

According to the sources, the Social Democrats, who had previously opposed this step, are ready to give in to the demands of the European People’s Party (EPP) and the Liberals to establish a full committee by September.

The agreement could be part of a larger deal on the distribution of tasks in the European Commission among the European political groups.

The new committee is expected to take over the powers of the existing security and defence subcommittee, as well as some of the powers of the industry and internal market committees, which currently deal with the defence industry.
