A new left-wing group could be formed in the European Parliament within a year.

Czech MEP Ondrej Dostal said so, the Report reported, citing TASS.

‘I am happy to announce that on Wednesday 11 September our coordination meeting with the Germans and Slovaks will take place,’ Dostal said in an interview with the Euractiv portal, referring to the Czech coalition of four non-parliamentary left and left-radical political forces STA ILO!, the German party Sarah Wagenknecht’s Union for Reason and Justice and the Slovak Smer – SD. This new group is trying to distance itself from the progressive left, focusing instead on more traditional left-wing values, such as labour rights, peace and economic stability, the portal said.

‘Depending on our colleagues in other countries, we expect this (faction formation) to take place perhaps within a year,’ the Czech MEP said. ‘At the very least, we can combine the efforts of our political delegations on voting opinions, common positions and co-operation of experts on specific issues,’ Dostal said.

As the portal notes, the declared parties have 13 MEPs, while 25 from seven EU member states are needed to form a group. However, Dostal is confident that this goal can be achieved. ‘Both are achievable,’ he said. The MEP is alluding to potential partners in the ‘South of Europe’, the portal notes.
