The European Union intends to demonstrate the EC’s commitment to development in its most remote regions, for which purpose Executive Vice-President Raffaele Fitto will visit the islands of Reunion and Mayotte in the Indian Ocean, which are French overseas territories, on 6-8 April.
This Report reports with reference to the European Commission.
‘The visit of the Executive Vice-President underlines the EU’s commitment to development, in particular through investment in cohesion, agriculture, fisheries and tourism financing,’ the EU said in a statement.
Raffaele Fitto’s visit comes after two devastating cyclones hit the islands this year.
In Reunion, Executive Vice-President Fitto will attend a conference of presidents of the EU’s most remote regions, where leaders will discuss how the EU can continue to support the 5 million citizens living there.
In Mayotte, Executive Vice-President Fitto will express the EC’s solidarity through the allocation of resources for vital infrastructure projects such as water and sanitation. ‘The visit will also be an opportunity to assess the impact of EU-funded projects such as the Interreg-funded PIROI centre on Reunion, which has played a central role in coordinating disaster response efforts,’ the statement said.
