German Ambassadors to Serbia Anke Konrad and French Ambassador Pierre Cochard have called on local authorities to recognise EU membership as a national priority and reaffirm their commitment to European security by joining sanctions against Russia.

TASS reports with reference to an article by the European diplomats published in the Politika newspaper

“January 2024 marks the 10th anniversary of the start of Serbia’s accession negotiations with the EU. We realise that the timeline may seem long to you, but this is a complex process, and we call on the authorities, all political and social forces and all citizens of Serbia to define the goal of EU accession as a national priority,” he said.

“Serbia’s participation in Europe’s common security is already important and we welcome it. We encourage it to reaffirm this positive momentum by continuing to support Ukraine and implementing the [anti-Russian] sanctions.”

Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic has repeatedly emphasised that despite the discontent of others, the country will build an independent policy, move towards the EU and maintain its traditional friendly relations with Russia and China. He stated that Belgrade has no intention of imposing sanctions against Russia or constantly making statements against Moscow and Beijing.
