Europe must maintain its presence in Niger.
This was stated by German Defence Minister Boris Pistorius in an interview with the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung newspaper, Report reported.
Pistorius said the FRG intends to remain active in the region.
“For us, it is important that Europe maintains a presence in Niger. And we want to remain active in the region so as not to cede this space to the Russians or others who contribute to further destabilisation. It is therefore important for us to have a presence on the ground,” he said.
As the head of the German Defence Ministry pointed out, further instability in the Sahel region would have very tangible consequences for Europe.
“Whether it is terrorism or illegal migration,” Pistorius explained.
In the summer of 2023, Niger condemned the military agreements with France and demanded the immediate withdrawal of all French forces from national territory. By the end of the year, all French troops in Niger, numbering more than 1,500, had left the country.
