While NATO remains the centre of Europe’s collective defence, the EU needs a much stronger European defence backbone.
This was stated by Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission (EC), speaking at the international security conference GLOBSEC Forum in Prague, the Report reported, citing Interfax.
‘We Europeans must have the means to defend and deter potential enemies. Member States have increased their defence spending [since the start of the conflict in Ukraine] by just over €200 billion (…) to almost €300 billion this year,’ she said.
According to him, the European ‘defence industry has also adapted to the new reality’.
‘Our goal should be to create a defence industry on a continental scale,’ he said.
