The United States and Ukraine have agreed on the draft terms of a minerals deal that has played a key role in Kiev’s efforts to win Washington’s support amid President Donald Trump’s push to quickly end the war with Russia.

A source close to the content of the draft agreement said the deal did not include any US security guarantees or details on whether arms flows would continue, but said the US wanted Ukraine to be “free, sovereign and secure”. One of the sources close to the deal said future arms shipments were still being discussed between Washington and Kiev. Trump said Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky wants to come to Washington on Friday to sign a “very big deal”. This comes after the two leaders exchanged hostile words last week. Describing the deal as a repayment of billions of dollars in aid to Kiev, the US president also said that some form of peacekeeping troops are needed in Ukraine if an agreement is reached to end the conflict. Moscow, which launched an invasion of Ukraine three years ago, has refused to accept any deployment of NATO forces.

Trump’s rush to end Russia’s war in Ukraine and his pivot toward Moscow has fueled fears that the United States is making sweeping concessions to Russian President Vladimir Putin that could jeopardize security in Ukraine and Europe and change the geopolitical landscape.
