The United States of America (USA) announced the cancellation of 83% of the programs run by the Agency for International Development (USAID). This decision marks a significant reduction in US foreign development assistance and has been widely criticized in the international community.

“After a 6-week review, we are formally canceling 83% of the programs at USAID,” Secretary of State Marc Rubio said, adding that “the 5200 contracts now canceled have spent tens of billions of dollars in ways that do not serve the core national interests of the United States.” “In consultation with Congress, we intend that the remaining 18% of the programs we are retaining will now be more effectively managed under the State Department,” Rubio added. USAID is an organization that works around the world in areas such as poverty alleviation, health care improvement, education and economic development. However, the US administration’s budget cuts and decision to reassess its priorities led to the termination of a large part of the agency’s programs.
