The US State Department has removed a statement on its official website that it does not support Taiwan’s independence, Reuters reported. The change comes in the shadow of tense relations between China and Taiwan.

However, the US continues to support Taiwan’s democratic government and has made arms sales to strengthen the island’s defense capacity. A spokesperson for the US State Department said the change in the website did not represent a change in policy and that there was no change in the US “One China” policy. “Our informal relations with Taiwan and our commitment to protect Taiwan’s self-esteem have not changed,” the spokesperson said. The move comes at a time when China is stepping up its claims over Taiwan. In recent months, China has stepped up its pressure by sending warplanes into Taiwan’s airspace and holding military exercises. The US move is seen as part of its efforts to strengthen ties with Taiwan. However, this could increase tensions between China and the US.
