The United States (US) has set a new condition for providing financial support to NATO partners. The US administration has proposed that NATO member states increase their defense spending to at least 2 percent of their gross domestic product (GDP) as a precondition for the allocation of funds.
This decision is intended to encourage NATO member states to fulfill their commitments to increase their defense budgets. US officials stressed that increased defense spending would strengthen the alliance’s collective security and preserve regional stability. “Increased defense spending by NATO members is vital to maintaining the alliance’s strength and effectiveness. The United States supports the fulfillment of these commitments and stands ready to provide financial support to countries that do so,” the State Department spokesperson said. At the 2014 summit, NATO member states pledged to increase defense spending to 2 percent of GDP within 10 years. However, some countries have yet to meet this target. The new US condition aims to put pressure on countries that have been slow to increase their defense spending.
This development has reopened the debate on financial burden sharing within NATO. The United States has long demanded that NATO members increase their defense spending and advocated for a fairer sharing of the alliance’s financial burden.
