Tommy Joyce, Acting Under Secretary for International Affairs at the US Department of Energy, on Friday highlighted the growing importance of South Korea in the Donald Trump administration’s strategy to increase American energy exports and diversify global supply chains.
Joyce, who participated in an energy forum organized by the American Chamber of Commerce in Seoul (AMCHAM) via video message, emphasized that South Korea is a key ally in Washington’s energy agenda. “Korea and each of you in Seoul are indispensable allies in pursuit of that goal,” Joyce said, adding that Korea plays an important role in opening American energy to world markets and supporting President Trump’s vision of building supply chains independent of China. The remarks come as talks continue over South Korea’s possible participation in a planned liquefied natural gas (LNG) infrastructure project in Alaska. The project, which Trump has also raised, aims to transport natural gas resources in northern Alaska to the south coast via a pipeline, where they will be liquefied and exported, especially to the Asian market.
