The EU summit announced the actual blocking of Georgia’s admission process to the European Union, accusing the country of violating European values.
This is stated in the summit’s final statement, APA reports citing TASS.
‘The European Council expresses serious concern about the course of the Georgian government, which goes against the values and principles on which the European Union is based. This course undermines Georgia’s European path and effectively stops the EU admission process,’ the statement reads.
The summit also declared its ‘readiness to support the Georgian people on the European path’, thus clearly opposing the people to the government. In addition, Brussels warned that it would ‘closely monitor’ the upcoming parliamentary elections in the republic, which should be ‘free and fair’, with the presence of foreign observers and fully supported by ‘free, independent and diverse media’.
To get back on the EU path, Brussels demanded that Georgia implement ‘democratic, comprehensive and sustainable reforms in line with the principles of European integration’.
