The European Union (EU) is preparing to phase out its sanctions on Syria. The decision was taken to improve the humanitarian situation in Syria and to support the post-conflict reconstruction process.
EU officials said that the situation in Syria is being closely monitored and the lifting of sanctions will depend on concrete steps taken by the regime and other parties. In particular, they emphasized the need to accelerate efforts to implement political reforms, increase respect for human rights and end the conflict. The gradual lifting of sanctions will allow for humanitarian aid efforts aimed at improving the living conditions of the Syrian people and the reconstruction of basic infrastructure. In this process, the EU stated that critical areas such as health, education and shelter should be prioritized. EU officials underlined that the full lifting of sanctions would depend on progress in the United Nations (UN)-led political settlement process. The EU also pledged to continue its cooperation with the international community to achieve lasting peace in Syria.
