European Union (EU) leaders are discussing European security and the Ukraine crisis at a summit in Brussels. During the meeting, the security problems caused by Russia’s aggressive behavior towards Ukraine and the measures to be taken by the EU in this regard are on the table.
The summit will focus on increasing military, economic and humanitarian aid to Ukraine and strengthening the defense capacities of EU countries. EU leaders are also in agreement on the continuation and expansion of sanctions against Russia. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen emphasized that Europe’s security is more important than ever and Ukraine will not be left alone in this process. “These are decisive days for Europe. Of course we will discuss how to achieve a just and sustainable peace for Ukraine,” she said. EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Kaja Kallas stressed the importance of investing in defense: “If we invest enough in defense and develop our capabilities, this will also help prevent aggression.” The summit also discussed energy security and steps to reduce energy dependence on Russia. EU countries aim to determine a common strategy to turn to alternative energy sources and diversify the energy infrastructure.
