The U.S. president-elect has previously said he opposes Kiev joining NATO

US President-elect Donald Trump has proposed deploying European troops to Ukraine to monitor the ceasefire, The Wall Street Journal reported citing officials.

At a Dec. 7 meeting in Paris with Volodymyr Zelensky and French President Emmanuel Macron, Trump said he “supports the creation of a strong, armed Ukraine, but opposes its membership in NATO.”

Trump believes Europe should take the lead in securing and supporting Ukraine, while the U.S. can support the process but has no plans to send troops

In addition, Trump expressed at the Paris meeting that Europe should “put pressure on China to influence Russia to end the conflict.” The two sides discussed the possibility of imposing duties on Chinese goods, which could be used as “negotiating tools.

However, the WSJ notes, European officials believe Trump has no clear plan to resolve the conflict in Ukraine
