Leaders of the Group of Twenty (G20) countries spoke in favour of reforming the UN Security Council.
As Report reports, this is stated in the final declaration of the summit of the association in Rio de Janeiro.
In the document published on the G20 website, the participants of the summit consider it necessary to strengthen the role of the UN General Assembly as a ‘leading deliberative, legislative and representative body’ of the world organisation, including in the issues of ‘maintaining international peace and security through strengthened and established interaction with the Security Council’.
‘We support a reform of the Security Council that meets the requirements and realities of the 21st century, making it more representative, inclusive, efficient, effective, democratic and responsible, as well as more transparent to all UN members <…>,’ the statement said. The G20 leaders, meanwhile, ‘called for an expansion of the Security Council,’ which would increase representation from Africa, Asia-Pacific, Latin America and the Caribbean. In addition, the leaders of the G20 member states spoke in favour of strengthening the role of the UN Economic and Social Council.
