The European Commission intends to release almost €400 billion from the EU budget, intended for the development of depressed regions of EU countries, and spend it on defence needs.
As Report reports, this is reported by the British newspaper Financial Times (FT).
According to the newspaper’s sources, the European Commission is planning to allow the EU states to spend on the military-industrial complex and military transport infrastructure funds from the so-called Cohesion fund. It was intended to finance the most backward regions of the bloc’s states and bring them closer to the advanced ones in terms of development.
Over seven years, the EU was going to allocate €392 billion for this purpose. The main recipients of the fund are the countries of Eastern Europe, primarily Poland and the Baltic States. The European Commission has not yet agreed to use this money for direct arms purchases, but it will be spent on investments in the military industry and military infrastructure projects
