The European Union (EU) needs to create a security and defence union that would complement NATO. Roberta Metsola, President of the European Parliament (EP), said in an interview with El Mundo newspaper.
‘The EU should always be stronger (…). And I say the same when it comes to creating, for example, a real security and defence union, a union that we have long demanded, that would complement NATO,’ she said.
Metsola said Europe must stand up for itself and be consistent and effective. Commenting on the US elections, the politician said the EU should always be ready for change regardless of what happens on the world stage next. She also expressed hope that Europe and the US would work together further. Earlier, The Washington Post newspaper quoted European officials as saying that the EU countries were preparing to change the US military support to Ukraine in case Republican candidate Donald Trump wins the upcoming presidential election.
