Hungary has refused to include a clause on Ukraine’s accession to NATO in its co-operation agreement with Ukraine. As explained by Hungarian Foreign Ministry spokesman Mate Patsolay, Budapest is still convinced that Kiev’s accession to the North Atlantic Alliance is tantamount to the start of World War III.
The foreign ministry spokesman confirmed that the sides were negotiating a ‘comprehensive co-operation agreement between Hungary and Ukraine, the most important part of which should be the restoration of the rights of the Hungarian national community’ in Transcarpathia.
‘At the same time, during the negotiations we made it clear to the Ukrainian side that Ukraine’s intention to join NATO cannot be part of this agreement,’ Pacolai said, commenting on Vladimir Zelensky’s recent statement about Ukraine’s desire to receive assurances from Hungary that it would not prevent it from joining NATO.
‘We have stated our position on this issue countless times, and there is no change in it. Ukraine’s accession to NATO would lead to the start of World War III,’ the MTI news agency quoted the Foreign Ministry spokesman as saying.
