Outgoing EU diplomatic chief Josep Borrel warned that the EU expects Serbia to fully adhere to the community’s foreign policy, including compliance with sanctions against Russia, otherwise it will undermine the process of its admission to the EU.
‘Serbia is a very important partner of the EU, a key partner in the Balkans. We expect Serbia to start fully following the EU’s foreign policy, otherwise it will undermine its path to EU accession,’ Borrel said at a press conference in Brussels presenting the European Commission’s annual enlargement report. He was responding to a question about Serbia’s refusal to join EU sanctions.
The EC report stressed that Serbia not only did not join the sanctions against Russia, but in the foreign policy track as a whole it complies with only 51 per cent of all EU decisions. In addition, the European Commission reproaches Belgrade for maintaining close ties with Russia and China. Despite these facts, the EC gave a favourable recommendation to continue negotiations on Serbia’s admission to the EU in 2025.
