Presidents of Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan Sadyr Zhaparov and Emomali Rahmon held talks on October 13.

The Tajik leader arrived in Bishkek to participate in the meeting of the Council of Heads of State of the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS). According to the press service of the President of the Kyrgyz Republic, during the meeting Sadyr Zhaparov and Emomali Rahmon discussed topical issues of Kyrgyz-Tajik bilateral cooperation, including the issue of delimitation and demarcation of the common state border.

It is noted that the heads of state “emphasized the importance of continuing regular political dialogue to strengthen good-neighborliness between the two countries and peoples”.

It should be recalled that in early October, the chairmen of the special services of the two countries – Kamchybek Tashiev and Saimumin Yatimov – announced the signing of Protocol No. 44. “This protocol, when implemented, solves all the issues and problems that were previously the basis and prerequisite for conflicts on the Tajik-Kyrgyz border. The signing of this protocol is the realization of the will of the heads of the two states,” Saimumin Yatimov said. Kamchybek Tashiev added that the signed protocol “gives grounds to solve all border issues”.

The content of the protocol was not disclosed, but on October 8 it became known that topographic working groups of the two countries agreed on 43.32 kilometers of the state border.

In total, the length of the border between the two countries is 972 kilometers. During a meeting in 2022, the presidents of Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan said they had agreed on 664 kilometers of the border. The problem is the remaining about 300 kilometers of the border. Experts noted that the most disputed and complicated areas remain.
