The world community needs to reform the UN Security Council, European Council President Charles Michel said.
According to Michel, the changes should affect the veto system and increase the effectiveness of the organisation in general, APA quoted Gazeta.ru as saying.
‘The world is being shaken by an explosive cocktail of successive upheavals. A third world war is possible. We need to return to sanity. This requires co-operation, courage and compliance with the rules,’ he said.
He added that the Security Council was increasingly weakened by the continued veto power of the permanent members, the United States, Russia, China, Britain and France. Michel emphasised that this mechanism should be redesigned and the structure of the Security Council should be expanded.
The issue of UN reform has remained unresolved for many years due to the divergent views of the organisation’s participants, particularly the permanent members of the Security Council. For example, the United States has proposed expanding the Security Council to include Japan, Germany, India and Brazil, while Russia favours the inclusion of African countries.
