Uzatom Agency and Rosatom’s engineering company Atomstroyexport signed a protocol on the start of work.

Uzbekistan signed a protocol on the start of work on the small-capacity nuclear power plant (SMR) project, which marks the transition to the active stage of preparatory activities. Within the framework of the project, the necessary design and licence documents will be developed. This was reported by the press service of Uzatom.

The signing ceremony took place in the presence of Azim Akhmedkhadjayev, Director of the Atomic Energy Agency under the Cabinet of Ministers of Uzbekistan, and Nikolai Spassky, Deputy General Director of Rosatom.

Otabek Amanov, director of the directorate for the construction of nuclear power plants under the Uzatom Agency, said that the signing of the protocol will allow starting work directly at the construction site, as the priority conditions in terms of regulatory and financial obligations of the parties have been fulfilled. ‘Rosatom’ has started active work on licensing documents and survey work for the location of the SMR.

Preliminary work on the SMR project began in the summer of 2024. In June, the first construction headquarters was held at the site of the future power plant, where the first priority tasks were identified. At the end of August, work began on creating a shift camp for the builders of the future nuclear power plant, which is the first step in the integrated development of the region. The region also plans to create cultural and educational projects, healthcare facilities, as well as attract the population and industrial companies to live and work here.
