Venezuelan law enforcement agents have surrounded the Argentine embassy building in Caracas, where six Venezuelan opposition activists are hiding.
The Argentine Foreign Ministry said the following, APA reported citing TASS.
“We inform the international community that at this moment patrols of Venezuelan intelligence and security forces have surrounded the official residence in Caracas,” the Argentine Foreign Ministry said in a statement. Buenos Aires also condemned Caracas’ decision regarding the Brazilian aid and thanked the neighboring country for its willingness to continue to protect the facilities of the diplomatic mission.
Earlier, the Venezuelan Foreign Ministry said Brazil had revoked Argentina’s authorization to represent its interests in Venezuela because dissidents sheltering in the country’s embassy were involved in preparing a terrorist attack and assassination attempt against Bolivarian President Nicolas Maduro.
Brazil has placed the Argentine Embassy in Caracas under protection after Venezuelan authorities demanded that countries that did not recognize Maduro’s re-election recall their diplomats. Argentine diplomatic staff left Venezuela, but six Venezuelan opposition activists who had been sheltering in the embassy since March remained in the country.
