Poland’s Permanent Representative to the European Union Piotr Serafin will be the country’s candidate for one of the commissioners in the new composition of the European Commission (EC).
This development was reported by the Rzeczpospolita newspaper, the Report reported, citing TASS.
The newspaper notes that it is not yet known what exactly Serafin will do in the EC. The republican government has not yet officially confirmed Serafin’s candidacy; Prime Minister Donald Tusk will announce his decision at a cabinet meeting on 13 August, after which he will meet President Andrzej Duda in the coming days. The nomination will then be sent to EC president Ursula von der Leyen, who has been confirmed for a new term.
According to the PAP agency, the post of European Commission member was rejected by the head of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic, Radoslaw Sikorski. In addition, Poland will not propose a candidate for von der Leyen’s deputy, who is likely to remain Latvian representative Valdis Dombrovskis. Polish media report that Warsaw is primarily interested in the portfolios of commissioner for defence, EU enlargement, climate policy, energy and the single market.
