The European Union should not consider the possibility of excluding Hungary from the Schengen area in response to Budapest’s steps to liberalise the visa policy for citizens of Russia and Belarus.

Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk told reporters, the Report reported, citing Russian media

“As you know, exclusion from the Schengen area is the first step towards exclusion from the European Union. I would be careful about statements on the exclusion of states from the EU,” he said. According to him, Europe “must not alienate Hungarians from themselves”.

At the same time, he noted that there are other countries in the EU that issue visas to citizens of Russia and Belarus.

“The rules of European law seem to have been violated. But Hungary is not the only country that issues visas to Belarusians and Russians,” he said.

Earlier, the Financial Times reported that Manfred Weber, head of the European People’s Party, the largest group in the European Parliament, had called on European leaders to take action against Hungary over its alleged simplification of visa issuance to Russian citizens.

Weber asked that Hungary’s steps on issuing visas to Russians be discussed at the next European leaders’ summit in October. https://report.az/ru/drugie-strany/premer-polshi-prizval-ne-isklyuchat-vengriyu-iz-shengenskoj-zony/
