French President Emmanuel Macron will reconvene the French Defence Council in relation to the riots in New Caledonia (France’s overseas territory in the Pacific Ocean).

The French leader’s administration said the meeting will be held at 18:30 local time (20:30 Baku time). The previous meeting of the Council was held on 15 May.

Earlier, French Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin said that French law enforcement agencies have completed the clearing of the main road leading from the capital of New Caledonia, Nouméa, to the international airport of La Tontouta. According to the latest information from the authorities, some 230 rebels have been detained and police and gendarmerie reinforcements, including GIGN and RAID special forces, continue to arrive on the island.

On 13 May, protests in the capital of New Caledonia against a French bill to expand voter lists for local elections turned into riots.

On 15 May, a state of emergency was declared in New Caledonia for 12 days and the army was called to protect ports and airports.
