Polish Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski has called on Georgian President Salome Zurabishvili to join the process of freeing convicted former President Mikheil Saakashvili.

According to the report, the foreign minister made this statement at the Munich Security Conference.

Sikorski and Zurabishvili took part together in one of the conference panels. In response to a question on Polish-Ukrainian relations, the Polish Foreign Minister decided to speak first about the situation in Georgia. He reminded the panellists that when he was Minister of Defence he was the first minister from a NATO country to visit Georgia. Sikorski described himself as a “friend of Georgia” and, addressing Zurabishvili, emphasised that his predecessor Saakashvili had also visited the conference before.

“For many of us he is a symbol of Georgia’s modernisation. We respect the rule of law, but we believe it is also very important that he is treated fairly. Perhaps you can also contribute to his release. This will be welcomed by those who wish good things for Georgia,” he said.
