Argentina’s new President Javier Milei has refused to join BRICS, which his predecessor had supported.
According to Gazeta.ru, Milei announced his refusal to join BRICS in official letters sent a few days ago to all leaders of the organisation.
“As you know, the foreign policy course of my government … differs in many respects from that of the previous government. Some decisions of the previous administration will therefore be reviewed. <…> At this stage, it is not appropriate to include the Argentine Republic as a full member of BRICS from 1 January 2024,” Milei said in his letter.
However, he assured each BRICS leader that Argentina wants to improve bilateral relations and increase trade and investment exchanges.
Argentina was invited to join BRICS at the end of August. In addition to Argentina, five other countries – Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, Saudi Arabia and the UAE – were invited. All of these countries will become members from 1 January 2024. If Milei had not submitted his rejection, Argentina would have automatically joined BRICS on an equal footing with the others.
BRICS has actually existed since 2006. It was last expanded in 2011 with the participation of South Africa.
