The EU summit failed to approve a €50 billion budget aid programme for Ukraine for the next four years, but expects to reach a compromise in January 2024.
This statement was made by European Council President Charles Michel to journalists at the end of the first day of the summit, the Report reports.
“We have just finished our meeting today. We discussed the long-term aid programme and I want to assure you that 26 leaders expressed their support for all components of this programme,” he said.
“All components of support to Ukraine are there, the solidarity fund, defence. We will come back to this issue in January and I am sure we will reach a compromise,” Michel said, stressing that only one country – Hungary – opposed the programme.
Michel also noted that the EU “sent a very strong signal to European and Ukrainian citizens by deciding to open accession negotiations with Ukraine and Moldova”.
